Sensory-Friendly Pediatric Dentistry
A calmer dental visit for kids who experience sound, light, touch, or smell differently — whether or not they have a formal diagnosis.
Some kids just feel everything more.
Bright overhead lights. The whine of the suction. The cool plastic of a chair. For kids with sensory processing differences — including but not limited to autism spectrum disorder — a typical dental visit can be overwhelming long before the exam even begins.
First Smile is set up to dial all of that down. Each accommodation is offered on its own; your child uses what helps and skips what doesn't.
Supports across every sense
Standard at every visit, no special request required.
Noise-reducing headphones, low background music or silence on request, no sudden suction.
Dimmable overhead light, sunglasses available, no flash for intraoral photography unless absolutely needed.
Weighted lap blankets, slow approach to the cheek and lip, no gloves snapped near the face.
Unscented PPE when possible, fluoride flavors chosen by your child, no strong cleaning products in the room.
Multiple flavor options for prophy paste and fluoride. Your child picks. No surprise tastes.
Slow, predictable chair recline. Pauses on request. Fidget items available for kids who self-regulate by movement.
A note about diagnosis
You do not need a formal diagnosis to ask for sensory accommodations. If you know your child gets overwhelmed in busy, bright, or unfamiliar spaces, tell us when you book. We adjust the visit before you walk in.
